FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE TOSHIBA BOOTH #L862 LAS VEGAS CONVENTION CENTER Toshiba Demos Quad-Speed ATAPI and SCSI CD-ROM Drives During Comdex; Drives Targeted To OEMs and Resellers. LAS VEGAS, Nov.13 - 17, 1995 -- Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc., Disk Products Division (TAIS DPD), will demonstrate two new CD-ROM drives targeted to OEMs and resellers, during COMDEX/Fall, Toshiba Booth #L862, Las Vegas Convention Center, Nov. 13 - 17. The two new drives, the XM-5401 Series and XM-5402 are SCSI and ATAPI interface drives, respectively. These quad-speed drives feature a fast 150ms random seek and 600KB/sec. sustained transfer rate. "The XM-5401 and XM-5402, which maintain Toshiba's standards for high quality and high reliability, represent exceptional values for OEMs and resellers," said Jerry Higgins, vice president CD-ROM marketing, TAIS DPD. Both the XM-5401 and XM-5402 employ Toshiba's variable speed playback system that allows the drive to read data before the disk reaches a specific rotational speed of 1, 2 or 4 times standard rotational speeds, thereby significantly improving drive access times. These drives feature Toshiba's digital servo control that offers greater precision in tracking and head positioning. The digital servo control feature combined with the new variable speed playback system optimizes the XM-5401 and XM-5402 drives' performance. In addition to supporting quad-speed applications, the XM-5401D and XM-5402 drives support 1X and 2X applications. Both drives are fully MPC-2 compliant, and support Kodak multisession Photo CD and CD Plus, red book, yellow book, CD-ROM XA, CD-Bridge, CD-I and CD-I Ready. Both drives can be used as CD-Audio players, independent of the computer system. Like all Toshiba CD-ROM drives, the XM-5401 and XM-5402 drives were built to provide high reliability -- both drives boast an 80,000 hour MTBF. For user convenience, the drives were designed with tray-loading mechanisms. A media removal prevention function ensures that CDs cannot be ejected during read operations. An emergency eject button is also standard on both drives. The new XM-5401B and XM-5402B are internal drives that measure only 1.6(h) x 5.7(w) x 7.5(d) inches and weigh only 1.98 pounds. The XM-5401D is an external drive that measures only 1.7(h) x 5.9(w) x 9.78(d) inches and weighs 2.95 pounds. Suggested list prices for the XM-5401B SCSI drive and XM-5402B ATAPI drive are $215 and $200 respectively. Both drives are available now.
